FINAL PIECE PREP

Following my previous experiments, I want to start introducing and refining ideas that will contribute to my final piece.

The divide

Something which I have been incorporating into my recent experiments is the cultural divide in South Africa as it's fascinating how, within one country, the big cities are so in-tune with the rest of the western world while tribes like the Ndebele people still exist.
I have shown this divide physically by building up more angular, taller blocks and separating them from the huts, splitting the whole piece into two sides of 'modern' vs 'Ndebele'. I have also used the coloured light to emphasise this.
In order to develop the 'modern side' I have included Coca Cola bottles and a rugby ball because these two shapes represent large western influences on South Africa.
American brand Coca Cola's existence has touched even the most remote parts of South Africa and has won top brand of South African townships two years in a row.
Rugby is huge in South Africa, the world champion winning nation, it is such a big part of their culture, everyone at every school plays it and seeing as it is an originally english sport it's a great example of a western influence.

In some of my responses I made use of the translucency of paper to give the huts a glowing effect. This was also a good tool in trying to portray a divide between the Ndebele people and modern culture. I wanted to include this idea in my final piece so made porcelain huts, the aim was to create a more solid structure but also retain the translucency and fragility of the paper.

Using paint buckets and funnels for the body and the roof, I made plaster moulds. Then the porcelain is poured in and the plaster dries up the liquid in contact with it.
Below are the photos of the finished porcelain huts combined with the 'modern side'.

Final experiments

Final Experiments
I wanted to now experiment with the fired porcelain and add the coloured light so I get a feel for composition before I conduct the official final piece.

Lights in hut

Lights In Hut
The last step before my final piece is to add lights to the porcelain huts so that they have the glowing effect. I did this by raising the whole scene onto cardboard so that I could attach the lights underneath.

Interestingly, when a white light was shone through, the porcelain glowed orange. In the bottom left picture, I added a filter over the light to achieve the red glow.
