JOSEPH TURNER

I have decided to look at Joseph Turner as an artist. I was drawn to Turner because of his intriguing use of colour and the impressionistic feel of his work. I find it interesting how the colour can affect the whole mood of the painting.

Above I have conducted an impasto painting. The photo came from a trip to Hambleden weir, I chose to paint from this one because the large trees and the still water reminded me of the landscapes in some of Turner's paintings and therefore allowed me to experiment in his style more easily. I used a palette knife because it enabled me to layer the paint on thick. Also, it created looser and less precise marks like in Turner's oil paintings.
In terms of colour, I made the tones with more yellow ochre as this is a very predominant colour in Turner's paintings and is used to create a warm, serene sense of place.

After looking at Joseph Turner's style of work and the landscapes he paints I went to Virginia water, which is a large man-made lake, and photographed the trees and the lake. I then used these as a base for more impasto experiments.
Below is an A1 painting I did of the photo above. I used a palette knife and acrylic, building it up in layers to achieve a thick texture. I used a lot of bold colours and a lot of yellow ochre just as Turner did. I want to continue with these warm colours and look at Hockney who uses completely artificial colours.
